Right when all hope seems lost, The Walking Dead season 10 finale, “A Certain Doom,” reveals that our heroes have a plan for luring away Beta’s walker horde from the hospital. No, it isn’t the most fool proof plan, considering Daryl, Carol, and a group of others have to make their way through the horde to get to their destination, but it might just be crazy enough to work!
As the Whisperers breach the hospital and the walkers chew on what’s left of poor Beatrice, Daryl and the rest make their way to a wagon waiting for them on the road just beyond the forest separating them from the horde. But this is no ordinary wagon. It’s a wagon rigged with a sound system blasting a song meant to attract the walkers and herd them away from the hospital. It’s an outrageous plan that would only work in The Walking Dead universe, right down to the song chosen by the heroes.
If the song sounded familiar to you but you’re not sure where you’ve heard it before, you might be surprised to learn that it’s actually a very popular song from 1983 called “Burning Down the House” from the album Speaking in Tongues by Talking Heads. A mix of new wave and funk music, the song was conceived during a jam session, according to bassist Tina Weymouth. During the session, drummer Chris Frantz kept yelling “Burn down the house,” inspired by a Parliament-Funkadelic show he’d recently attended. Talking Head’s frontman David Byrne liked the line, adapting it for what became “Burning Down the House.”
You can give it a listen again below:
While the group’s plan to redirect Beta’s horde works at first, the Whisperers eventually catch up to Daryl, Carol, and the rest, destroying the speakers and forcing the the group to free. But instead of running away, the heroes double back, sneaking back into the horde to take out Beta’s remaining followers one by one until only the hulking brute is left. Once they’ve got Beta surrounded, Daryl and Negan make quick work of the flesh-wearing goon, turning him into a meal for the walkers Alpha’s second-in-command loved so much.
You could call The Walking Dead season 10 finale a particularly happy ending, although the Commonwealth cliffhanger at the end of the episode could point to darker days ahead for the communities. One thing is for sure, though: the Whisperers won’t be bothering Alexandria, Hilltop, or Oceanside anymore. And now that Maggie’s back with her own group, the settlements will hopefully be able to rebuild themselves into something stronger and more united than ever before. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Fortunately, while “A Certain Doom” is considered the “finale” of season 10, it isn’t actually the last episode of the season. AMC will air six “extra” episodes of season 10 in early 2021 before airing the two-year, 24-episode 11th and final season of the series later next year.
What will those new season 10 episodes be about? We don’t quite know but showrunner Angela Kang did tell us in an interview that the episodes will “start to dive into some of those mysteries that we’ve left behind” in the season 10 finale. That means it’s quite possible the new episodes will pick up right where “A Certain Doom” left off, allowing fans to learn a bit more about the Commonwealth early next year.
