Arrowverse fans were thrilled to learn that Batman Beyond voice actor Kevin Conroy would be part of The CW’s highly-anticipated Crisis on Infinite Earths lineup after it was announced, but when he finally popped up in Batwoman’s ninth episode as Earth-99’s Bruce Wayne at the tail end of last year, some viewers were left reeling after Bruce’s encounter with Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) and Supergirl Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) resulted in an attempt to kill Kara.
In a new interview with former Lex Luthor Michael Rosenbaum on his Inside of You podcast, Conroy revealed that he didn’t know just how evil his Crisis on Infinite Earths Bruce Wayne would be when he agreed to star in the latest crossover event.
“Well I didn’t know I was going to try and kill Supergirl,” he said. “He was dark, he was dark. A lot of fans were not happy about that. They didn’t like seeing that version of Bruce Wayne. For me it was fun though – it was a lot of fun to sort of stretch my acting chops a bit.”
The Bruce Wayne who Conroy played on Earth-99 had become a nihilistic, stone cold killer, and had already managed to take down Superman long before Kate and Kara arrived on the scene.
“They didn’t tell me anything about this Batman,” Conroy said. “They just said he was the Batman in the future – he was old Bruce Wayne. And I said ‘You mean like Batman Beyond old Bruce Wayne?’ and they said ‘No he’s not 80 but he’s older. And he’s in bad shape.'”
Conroy confirmed that he excitedly signed up for the role after a 25-year on-screen absence with zero knowledge of what was about to play out.
“They’re so guarded with their scripts, the studios as you know,” he explained. “They don’t give ’em out. So they didn’t give me anything. I got a script basically when I was about to get on a plane to fly to Vancouver to do the show. I didn’t see anything. I said yes because I was so excited to do something on camera again.”
In the intimate interview, Conroy also talks about his ongoing battle with anxiety, his turbulent childhood, his acting start at Julliard, and what it was like living with Robin Williams. He also said he “would love to” play his Crisis on Infinite Earths version of Wayne again on screen.

Conroy also recently joined the Batman Forever #ReleaseTheSchumacherCut cause via Twitter, after a grittier 170-minute cut of the late director’s 1995 Caped Crusader entry was confirmed to exist. The cut reportedly includes 49 extra minutes packed with further screen time for Jim Carrey’s Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones’s Two-Face.
