REVIEW: Guardians Of The Galaxy #1 — “There’s An Idiotic Kind Of Glee To This”

(Marvel Comics, creative team: Al Ewing, Juann Cabal, Federico Blee, Cory Petit)

There’s an idiotic kind of glee to this star spanning romp as some of the team are over the endless cycle of punching and blasting while some can’t resist the call to battle. The Olympians have been reborn and they are jerks, murdering and plundering their way through planetary colonies for blood tribute. Nova (the experienced one), Phyla-Vell (from another universe), Moondragon (ditto), Star-Lord, Rocket and the always charming Marvel Boy (Noh-Varr, also from another universe) decide to bring the errant gods down. There’s things that are brilliant and things that are just unfortunate as plans are made and executed … sort of. Star-Lord is in the book, so shenanigans have to be in it somewhere. The Al Ewing script has tons of solid moments and the visual storytelling from Cabal, Blee and Petit are striking and memorable. This is a super fun book with the perfect last page surprise and is totally worth your time. RATING: BUY.
