This week sees Book Expo kick off in New York. And celebrated graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier is that to show off her upcoming new book, Guts. And also to celebrate how far comic books have come in the book marketing arena. She tweets,
I’m not going to pretend: this is so cool. A dozen+ years in, graphic novels are part and parcel of the book industry. #BookExpo pic.twitter.com/ma0NIfwo1q

With Joe Field of Flying Colors comic shop in California and originator of Free Comic Book Day joining in.
It’s what many of us have been working toward for decades. But it’s only been the last dozen years or so when the rest of the world has starting to catch on to the richness & depth of comics in book form.
Congrats, Raina!— Joe Field (@flycojoe) May 29, 2019
With other comments from school librarians…
Graphic novel issues are up exponentially for 8-12s in our Scottish school library. Can’t keep a Telgemeier book on the shelves for love nor money! Kudos also to @haleshannon, @robochai, @verabee, @svetlania and #DavPilkey, who have really captured kids’ imaginations lately 😍

Parents…
Graphic novels, most specifically yours, provided my son with confidence in his reading, creativity, and self, at a time when he was at a deep low. I’ll always be grateful for you and your amazing stories, for helping to lift him back up.

Cartoonists…
North America is finally starting to catch up with the rest of the world re: recognizing graphic novels. It’s incredibly heartening to see. Thank you for your bountiful contributions to this shift in perspective!

We saw the crowds at Midtown Comics for Raina yesterday. She will also be signing galleys of Guts at the show today from 1.30 to 2.30 pm at Table 1 at a ticketed event. Love to see more from Book Expo…
