Last year, Bleeding Cool was the only major media outlet to report that faith in U.S. Leadership had fallen drastically in 2017 due to the controversy surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi, particularly due to the movie’s poor performance with Chinese audiences. However, things are looking brighter with the release of an updated Gallup report showing an uptick in approval of U.S. leadership and a decline in disapproval, a change which we can only conclude is inextricably linked to Marvel’s relaunch of the legendary comic book series, Uncanny X-Men.
Think about it. U.S. approval ratings were near a ten-year high when Uncanny X-Men Volume 4 was being published in 2016, but things fell apart when the series was canceled in 2017. With the return of Uncanny X-Men with a new volume in November of 2018, a slow recovery started. Can you think of any other major socio-political factor which could have affected global perceptions of U.S. leadership during that same timeframe? Exactly.
Though the median U.S. approval rating rose by just 1% in 2018, it’s important to consider that the relaunch of Uncanny X-Men was only active for 2 out of 12 months of the year. Further, people around the world are likely fearful that the relaunch-prone Marvel Comics could cancel the series again, and it will take time to rebuild trust in a strong, ongoing Uncanny X-Men series. Faith in U.S. leadership’s ability to provide a steady stream of Uncanny X-Men comics isn’t helped by lead writer Matthew Rosenberg repeatedly quitting Twitter, either. Regardless, a gain is a gain is a gain, and the three-point drop in disapproval rating can’t be overlooked either.
Though global mediums paint a picture of recovery, the same was not true in all regions. Europe’s faith in U.S. leadership fell from 25% to 24% in 2018, but this was offset by gains of 24% to 31% in the Americas, 20% to 32% in Asia, and 51% to 52% in Africa, where the U.S. is most popular.
“The people of Wakanda and its neighbors are pleased with Marvel’s commitment to publishing Uncanny X-Men comics,” said a proclamation issued by the government of real African nation Wakanda. In addition, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un issued a statement on state-run media which echoed the feelings of other countries in the region that, while reducing sanctions by launching a new ongoing Uncanny X-Men series is a clear sign that President Trump and his longtime friend and ally, Marvel Chairman Ike Perlmutter, are giving into the nation’s demands, U.S. leaders are still “pusillanimous buffoons” for refusing to allow legendary writer Chris Claremont write more than a few backup stories and one-shots per year.
Meanwhile, the country of Latveria in Europe, where U.S. approval was lowest, interrupted the broadcast of the Super Bowl in January by hijacking the airwaves to play a recorded message from the country’s leader condemning Marvel’s decision to bring back The Fantastic Four, which only serves to prove that you can’t please everyone.
