Sina Grace Says Capitalism to Blame for the Return of Iceman

Back in June, we learned that the cult-favorite Iceman comic would return with a five-issue miniseries in September after being unceremoniously canceled as part of a massive culling across Marvel’s lineup.

In an interview with Newsarama, writer Sina Grace revealed the reason why Marvel decided to bring the book back.

Blame capitalism! The original series kind of took off in the book market, and Marvel knew I was eager to continue working with the character. I feel like we’d only hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of exploring Iceman’s powers, and I definitely had a few more yarns in me with regards to pushing his story. Also I built that entire answer around an iceberg pun. Ick.

Yes, it’s shocking, but people do buy comics outside of the direct market. In fact, this might come as a surprise, but there are actually more people who don’t go to comic book stores than there are people who do. It’s almost as if there’s a massive untapped market for superhero comics waiting to be marketed to out there or something. But what do we know?

Grace also revealed some details about the story in the book, which see Mr. Sinister looking to capture Bobby and use his body for nefarious genetic experiments.

Bobby is starting to pursue what he wants in this world. He’s still teaching at the Xavier Institute in Central Park. We’re finding him in a spot where he’s his own boss in a lot of ways, and he’s learning to find his superhero groove, so to speak. When he discovers a crisis in the catacombs with the Morlocks, it sets off the series of events for the arc in a really neat way.

Check out the full interview here, and pick up Iceman #1 when it hits stores on September 12.
