Marvel Comics Announces Shatterstar Solo Series

Marvel Comics Announces Shatterstar Solo Series

The mutant Shatterstar has been a member of Cable’s militaristic X-Force unit, as well as Jamie Madrox’s X-Factor Investigations, but come October he’ll get the spotlight all to himself in a new limited series from writer Tim Seeley and artist Carlos Villa.

“I was 12 years-old when I first saw Shatterstar in the pages of New Mutants, and I was the perfect age to be intrigued by him,” Seeley told Marvel.com. “The dude’s an alien gladiator! And within pages of us meeting him, he stabs himself with his own swords in order to kill the bad guy standing behind him.”

When asked to describe his pitch for the series, Seeley noted it will be steeped in the X-Men mythology, with a little John Wick tossed in as an added bonus. “When the life he built crumbles, Shatterstar is forced to ask himself if he truly ever gave up the gladiator ring. The series will be part John Wick, a dash of Will Eisner’s A Contract with God, and infused with lots of lots of interdimensional X-Men Super Hero mythos.”

Seeley’s run will draw inspiration from many of the classic X-Men stories from the ’80s and ’90s, including work from Shatterstar’s creators, Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld. “I really stuck close to the Fabian Nicieza, Rob Liefeld stuff—especially those last few issues of New Mutants where you can see the purest form of this guy. I also really leaned on the Longshot limited series by Ann Nocenti and Art Adams, as well as the ‘Shattershot’ storyline from the old X-Men annuals.”

Lewis Tan recently portrayed Shatterstar in Deadpool 2, where he was recruited by Wade Wilson for his first iteration of X-Force. Unfortunately, Shatterstar didn’t make it out of the movie alive, though Tan still believes the character could appear in an X-Force feature film down the line.
