Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen will launch Ascender at Image Comics, set in the same universe as their breakout fantasy series, Descender, which is coming to a close.
Ascender will take place 10 years after the conclusion of Descender and all robots disappearing, with magic returning to stake its claim over the universe. The description teases Descender‘s robot protagonist, TIM-21, will still have a part to play in the new series, when “one girl must embark on an epic quest to find robotkind and its fabled boy messiah, TIM-21, before it’s too late…”

“Dustin and I love the world of Descender and we’re re-energized by this new direction, which has opened all sorts of new storytelling possibilities for us,” Lemire said in a press release. “Ascender will feel like a continuation of the Descender saga and like a brand new book all in one.”
Nguyen added, “Plus, it’ll be fantastic to switch from drawing machines and metal all day, to all flesh and fantasy for a while!”
Descender #32, on sale July 25, will mark the end of the series, with its description bringing the currently unfolding storyline to a close, while also teasing what’s to come in Ascender:
The critically acclaimed, bestselling saga of DESCENDER comes to a shocking conclusion in this final issue that will leave the universe of Tim-21 reeling. But as darkness consumes the galaxy, a new hope arises…
Ascender, from Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, will make its Image Comics debut in 2019.
