Marvel has been very wishy-washy in the past about whether or not about certain characters are mutants. Take Cloak and Dagger, whose status has been a subject of indecision over the years.
But the matter was apparently settled with the 2010 Cloak and Dagger one-shot, part of the Nation X storyline, in which Dr. Nemesis unequivocally set the record straight: Cloak and Dagger are not mutants:
“Mutants have X-Genes. Mutants Show up on Cerebro. You haven’t and you don’t.”
But in this week’s Cloak and Dagger #1, the start of a new digital series by Dennis Hopeless, David Messina, Elisabetta D’Amico, Giada Marchisio, and Travis Lanham, with cover by Mahmud Asrar and Dave McCaig, title page design by Idette Winecoor, assistant editing by Lauren Amaro, editing by Devin Lewis, executive editing by Nick Lowe, editor-in-chiefing by the artist formerly known as Akira Yoshida, and spellchecking by unpaid intern Vlad Kozinerkov, Marvel seems to have reversed that decision.
Right there on the title page (thanks Idette!), the introduction explaining the characters to new readers states that the experimental drug “trail” (trial? damn you, Vlad!) triggered “latent mutant genes.” In other words, Cloak and Dagger are mutants after all!
So it looks like Cloak and Dagger are mutants after all. Maybe there’s hope for Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch yet.
