When BOOM! Studios acquired the license to Firefly this year, we knew it would be a big deal. Not only was this the biggest license acquisition in the company’s history, until they announced that Buffy The Vampire Slayer news – albeit a day after we did it for them – but it also marked the first time we’d see a comic with the Firefly name.
And we have learned that Firefly #1, from Greg Pak and Dan McDaid, just FOC’d this week with pre-orders of 57,291 copies.
That’s a turnaround from Dark Horse’s numbers. Their first Firefly comic, Serenity: Those Left Behind #1 from 2005 sold an estimated 38,507 to North American comic book stores.
Over time, with successive series, those sales improved. Serenity: Leaves On The Wind #1 in 2014 launched at an estimated 69,894 – though that was over its first year and also did not include sales outside of North America.
But last time Dark Horse launched a Firefly comic it was Serenity: No Power In The ‘Verse #1 in 2016 and it reportedly sold an estimated 39,492 copies, again did not include sales outside of North America, back down to where they started.
But BOOM! Studios has taken it back up again. Firefly #1, from Greg Pak and Dan McDaid, just FOC’d this week with pre-orders of 57,291 copies. Now that does include orders from the UK, Australia, Eire, France etc. But it doesn’t include any advance reorders yet to be made.
And it’s even in canon with what Dark Horse previously published…
I read Firefly #1 by @gregpak and @danmcdaid. I guarantee I know this world better than any other retailer, and my non spoiler impression is…it's great. Continuity works perfectly with the show, movie, Dark Horse books. Character's are spot on, and there's an amazing reference.

This also beats out Boom’s previous Power Rangers: Shattered Grid event. Firefly #1 hits stores on November 14th. Their $150 “Big Damn Heroes” box will follow November 21, with a variant cover for Firefly #1 limited to just that box, along with an exclusive variant cover for Firefly: Legacy Edition Book One.
And then there’s the 1:200 variant cover by Bill Sienkiewicz SIGNED by Joss Whedon. With retailers praying to the gods of distribution that they come through undamaged.
Gotta make you wonder what those Buffy #1 orders will look like in January…
