John Pearson, co-creator of the horror comic Beast Wagon and P M Buchan, co-creator of the folk-horror series Heretics , are bringing an extremely limited-edition preview of their next unsettling project together to Thought Bubble, Leeds, on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September.
The new project, intended to build on the disturbing realism that the pair are known for, contains an introduction by author and Fortean essayist John Reppion.
The duo, who last collaborated in Leeds on the 2016 Heretics folk-horror exhibition (featuring original artwork from Ben Templesmith, Martin Simmonds and Sarah Gordon), will also be creating a revenge-themed large-scale live sketches over the weekend based on concept art from the new project.
You’ll be able to find it – and them – on tables 157 and 158 in the ComiXology Marquee. And from 1-2pm on both days, joined by letterer Adtiya Bidikar, for a signing for… whatever this thing is. You’ll also have the chance to see unpublished pages from Heretics, sneak peaks, unannounced projects and other works in separate development by Pearson and Buchan, as well as to buy limited edition prints and back issues of other comics by the two creators.
“We don’t want to give too much away about our new collaboration at this stage,” P M Buchan said, “but it definitely builds on the dark and adult themes present in our past work with art collective 44FLOOD. The world keeps getting darker and darker, from the rise of divisive populist politicians and the scapegoating of minority groups for political gain, to the increasing divide between the haves and have-nots, the distance between the dreams of prosperity that we’re mis-sold and the brutal realities of modern life. That distance between dreams and reality has always been a theme in my writing, something that I hope readers will connect with.”
P M Buchan has written for the Times Literary Supplement, Rue Morgue Magazine and Lionsgate Fright Club magazine, and has been quoted by The Guardian as an authority on comics in the UK. His comic strips have been serialised in Starburst (the world’s longest running magazine of sci-fi, fantasy and horror) and SCREAM: The Horror Magazine. He is co-creator of the Gothic-horror series LA BELLE DAME SANS MERCI, obscene horror-comedy anthology BLACKOUT, and feminist sex-doll satire THE OBJECT OF MY AFFECTION.
John Pearson has worked as variant cover artist for the Image series PARADISO and has created bespoke illustrations for clients including Titan Comics, 2000AD, Vice Press, Lionsgate Films, Rue Morgue Magazine, The Ray Harryhausen Foundation, Nuclear Blast Records and Kendall Calling Festival. The Guardian described his comic-book series Beast Wagon as a ‘twisted zoological fable’. Pearson was also the lead organiser of successful Thought Bubble fringe parties in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
